What a landing page is, when it makes sense to have one instead of a full website, and how to build one that actually converts.
Definition: landing page vs website
A website has multiple pages and covers multiple topics, with navigation, a blog, references, pricing, contact. Visitors arrive from different sources (SEO, direct, referral).
A landing page is ONE page built for ONE goal (a specific campaign, offer, event). It has no main navigation (or minimal navigation) and no links that lead away. The goal: a visitor coming from an ad → takes one action (buys, signs up, submits a form).
When you need a landing page
- You’re running a Google Ads or Meta campaign - you pay per click, so you need maximum conversion from a page that focuses entirely on that offer.
- You’re launching a new product or service and want to test market response before building a full site.
- You’re running a webinar, event or launch - a one-off with a clear date.
- You’re running an A/B test of two versions of a message without changing the main site.
- You have a limited-time offer (a sale, demo, early-bird) and want to give it its own page.
Anatomy of a landing page that converts
- Hero (above the fold): a clear headline (what you offer, for whom), a subheadline (why it matters), a CTA button, a product image or video.
- Social proof: client logos, number of users, testimonials - within the first 2-3 scrolls.
- Problem-solution: briefly explain the problem you solve, and how.
- Benefits, not features: “Cuts the time by 50%” beats “Has an advanced cache system”.
- How it works: 3-4 steps, shown visually.
- FAQ: the most common doubts a visitor has before clicking the CTA.
- One consistent CTA: same button, same color, same text - 3-4 times on the page.
Common mistakes
Too many CTA options - “buy” + “learn more” + “contact” + “download” = the visitor doesn’t know what to do.
Main navigation - sends the visitor back to the site instead of keeping them on the offer.
Too much text - a landing page is not an essay. Scanning, not reading.
No social proof - nobody trusts an empty brand.
Forgotten mobile - 70%+ of ad traffic is mobile.
