Why a fast website earns more, how to measure where you stand today and concrete fixes you can make in seven days.
Why website speed matters at all
Google has officially confirmed that Core Web Vitals is a ranking factor. An LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) above 2.5 seconds and a CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) above 0.1 genuinely push your site lower in the SERP. Beyond SEO, speed directly affects conversion: Amazon estimated that 100ms of delay = 1% less revenue.
An extra factor in the Serbian market is that most visitors arrive on mobile devices over 4G/5G, often with a poor signal. A site that loads in 1.2s on fast internet can take 6+ seconds in real life.
How to measure where you stand
- PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) - Google’s official tool; it shows LCP, FID/INP and CLS and gives concrete recommendations.
- WebPageTest.org - a more detailed analysis where you can choose the location (ideally Belgrade or Frankfurt for the Serbian market) and connection speed.
- Chrome DevTools → Lighthouse - in the browser, free, the same engine as PageSpeed.
Run the test 3 times and take the median, not the best result. The first run is always misleading because the cache is empty.
The five most common causes of a slow website in Serbia
- Unoptimized images - WordPress sites often load full-size photos of 4-8 MB. The fix: WebP format, lazy loading, correct width/height attributes.
- Too many plugins - every plugin adds JS/CSS. If you have more than 20, check which ones you actually use.
- Cheap shared hosting - €2-3 a month costs you 2-5 seconds per page. A realistic recommendation: SiteGround, Kinsta, Cloudways or a good VPS.
- No caching - WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, W3 Total Cache. Setup takes 30 minutes, and the site gets 2x faster.
- A TTFB problem - the server takes too long to respond. A CDN (Cloudflare is free) and better hosting fix this.
What we do in our process
Every site we ship starts from a performance budget: LCP < 2.0s, CLS < 0.05, JS bundle < 150KB. We use Next.js or optimized WordPress with the block editor and a custom theme, images in WebP + srcset, Cloudflare CDN, and we measure every deploy. See also WordPress or custom.
